Remote voting

If you will be in New Zealand at any point during the voting period, you can vote in person at any voting place.

Voters in remote locations can be issued voting papers electronically, or where not able to receive them electronically, by post. If you’re not able to obtain voting papers electronically or by post, you may also be able to vote by telephone dictation.

Applications to vote using Remote Voting Services must be made as early as possible to allow time for voting papers to be issued and completed. The deadline to apply for a telephone dictation vote is noon on election day.

Voters who are overseas can vote using Overseas Voting Services. This could include people in Tokelau or Ross Dependency, or people on vessels, islands or installations outside NZ territorial waters (12 nautical miles).

The fastest way to obtain voting papers if you are overseas is to download them.

If you’re on the unpublished roll, you won’t be able to download your voting papers. Please contact us to discuss your options.

Completed voting papers can be returned via upload. Uploaded voting papers must be received by the close of voting on election day.

If there are several people in the same location, a group application can be made to vote using the Overseas Voting Services or Remote Voting Services. Please contact us for more information.

If you’re deployed overseas you may vote using our Overseas Voting Services, or, if this isn’t possible, you may apply to vote using Remote Voting Services. This includes any eligible family members who may be deployed with you.

Applications to use Remote Voting Services must be made as early as possible, to allow time for voting papers to be sent to you.
