Waiheke Island has undeniably its strongest link with the mainland via the heavily frequented ferry service into the Auckland CBD. Its Māori Electorate association should reflect this logistical tie in the same way that the General Electorate it is associated with is the Auckland Central electorate. In fact, the only ferry service connecting Waiheke to Hauraki-Waikato is the once-a-day ferry to the Coromandel.
People who live on Waiheke Island but do not work on the island are invariably commuting into Tāmaki Makaurau for work. Māori living on Waiheke have more common interestswith urban Auckland and Tāmaki-Makaurau than with most of Hauraki-Waikato, which extends as far south as Te Awamutu.
The island’s one Marae, Piritahi sits on Auckland Council reserve and is a nga hau e wha in that it welcomes peoples from all the fours winds and is not a tribal Marae. The Mana Whenua, Ngāti Pāoa have interests spanning from Te Aroha to Warkworth, already across 3 Māori Electorates: Hauraki Waikato, Tāmaki-Makaurau and Te Tai Tokerau.

Suggested solution

• We recommend the inclusion of Waiheke Island into the Tāmaki-Makaurau electorate.

I support the proposed change moving 100 voters in Naenae from Te Tai Tonga to Ikaroa-Rāwhiti. I believe that making the boundary correspond between with the boundary of the general electorates of Remutaka and Hutt South will help voters understand their electorate boundaries and decrease confusion around electorates.
Additionally, the small amount of voters effected, in my view, means that the relatively minor disruption is worth the clarity this change will make in regards to electorate boundaries.

1. The areas of Hatfields Beach and Waiwera are excluded from the proposed Whangaparaoa electorate. Both areas are geographically part of the proposed Whangaparaoa electorate's catchment area in a physical sense.
2. The proposed electorate name should be changed to Hibiscus Coast to more accurately reflect the underlying geographical area.

Suggested solution

1. Include the areas of Hatfields Beach and Waiwera within the boundaries of the proposed Whangaparaoa electorate.
2. Change the name of the proposed Whangaparaoa electorate to Hibiscus Coast.

First of all Rodney is not Whangaparaoa. If you were going to re draw the boundaries I would suggest you put the Hibiscus Coast together, put Helensville and Kumeu together and everything else north of the Puhoi Tunnels including Waiwera, Mangawhai and Kaiwaka to Rodney. This is more of a natural boundary. Helensville, Kumeu and Huapai belong on the west coast and have their own needs and relationships and have nothing to do with Warkworth or Puhoi or Wellsford. We need to have a strong voice in parliament and as a growing area we should have a boundary that reflects our community.

Suggested solution

My suggested solution is as above.
Put the Hibiscus Coast communities together - Orewa, Whangaparaoa, Hatfields Beach, Dairy Flat.
Put the west coast together - Helensville, Huapai and Kumeu.
Put Rodney together - Waiwera, Puhoi, Warkworth, Snells Beach, Matakana Coast, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka.

What has north west Auckland, now Rodney, got to do with the whangaparoa which is on the other coast.

Suggested solution

Leave Rodney as Rodney.

I object to the new electorate being called "Whangaparaoa". Although the peninsula is a prominent feature, this area has been know as the "Hibiscus Coast" for many many years and most of the people in it would identify as "Coasties". Orewa/ Dairy Flat etc is not Whangaparaoa but is part of the Hibiscus Coast.

Suggested solution

Call the new electorate "Hibiscus Coast".

The name whangaparao is too difficult to spell correctly and is not even where I live.

Suggested solution

The new name must be called Hibiscus Coast.

Many people living in the electorate call themselves "coasties" - as the area is know as Hibiscus Coast. It is a very familiar name and I feel it would serve the people here with this identity. The proposed name is longer and might be harder for people unfamiliar with Maori words.

Suggested solution

Hibiscus Coast

Whangaparāoa is already the name of a town in the Rodney district. Please consider instead using 'Hibiscus Coast' to avoid confusion and to avoid having to specify Whangaparāoa-the-town or Whangaparāoa-the-electorate.

Suggested solution

Hibiscus Coast
