Everyone’s voice is important
Your vote is important – it is time to make sure you are enrolled and ready to vote in the election.
Voting starts on Monday 2 October and ends on Saturday 14 October.
The Electoral Commission has resources about the 2023 General Election available in a range of alternate formats to ensure that all New Zealanders have access to information about enrolling and voting.
Enrolment and voting information is available in New Zealand Sign Language, large print, audio, Braille and Easy Read formats from vote.nz
Voting places
A list of voting places is also included in the EasyVote packs the Electoral Commission sends to enrolled voters at the start of voting.
There will be symbols on the lists of voting places on vote.nz and in people’s EasyVote packs, showing which voting places are ‘accessible’ and ‘accessible with assistance’.
The accessible symbol is a wheelchair and is used for voting places where there is independent access to and within the building.
The accessible with assistance symbol shows a person standing behind a wheelchair. It is used for voting places that may have a steep ramp.
Getting help to vote
If you need assistance to read or mark your voting paper at a voting place, you can bring a support person with you. An electoral official can also assist you. Your chosen support person can go behind the screen with you to read aloud the words on the voting paper and to tick the boxes if you ask them to. They are not allowed to tell you who to vote for.
If you are blind, partially blind or have a physical disability that means you cannot mark your voting paper without help, you can vote using the telephone dictation service.
NZSL interpreters will be available at certain voting places at set times in Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland.
There are also voting services for people who cannot get to a voting place, for example because of poor health or mobility.
For more information about these services visit vote.nz, free call 0800 36 76 56 or free text your name and address to 3676.
